Odessa High School running back Bradley Marquez broke the
school’s 63-year-old all-time rushing record on Friday night in Amarillo when
he rushed for 148 yards and a touchdown in the Bronchos’
17-7 loss at Ratliff Stadium.
The 2011 Texas Tech commit now has 3,520 career rushing
yards, passing the 3,463 yards set by Byron Townsend in 1947.
Bittersweet, Marquez was happy to grab the record this early
in the season but would have traded a win over Amarillo and future Tech
teammate James Castleman (DT) for anything.
“The record’s nice, but we need to win these kinds of
games,” Marquez told The Odessa American.
The 5-foot-11, 185-pound back has made quite a comeback this
season since missing the majority of the 2009 season after an elbow injury
sidelined him midway through the season. Marquez came back stronger and better
this season, turning heads with every move in Odessa’s first five games.
He’s rushed for totals of 123, 255, 380, 380 and 148 for a
total of 1,286 yards on 114 carries (11.3 yards/carry). He also has 17
touchdowns this season.
Marquez has five games remaining including one of the
biggest stages set up for the Bronchos’ District 3-5A
opener against defending Class 5A Division II champion Abilene High in Abilene
on Oct. 8.
