The Red Raiders were thrown a mid week pop
quiz by the coaching staff, a nice mid-morning scrimmage on the floor of Jones
This workout was the front end of a series of
two-a-day workouts this week added by Tommy Tuberville after camp started as
the second summer school session finished up.
Who’s out: Tony Morales, Beau Carpenter, LeRaven Clark were all out recovering from concussions.
Cornelius Douglas also did not participate in the scrimmage. During the morning
workout, Austin Zouzalik, Eugene Neboh,
Marcus Kennard, and Quentin White all sought treatment from the trainers.
Quentin White is now reported to have a broken foot and will redshirt this
Who’s in: Starting O-Line was Waddle (LT)
James Polk (LG) Gallington ( C
) A.Morales (RG) and McDaniel (RT). First 4 on the DL
were Brandon Jackson, Hyder, Simmons, and Kindred Evans. Second 4 were Jackson Richards, Wesley, Mackey and Pete Robertson. Bruce Jones and Derrick Mays got a lot of work at corner with Douglas and Neboh being sidelined.
Play of the day on defense:
Bruce Jones batted away a pass intended for Darrin Moore in the end zone on a playaction pass.
Play of the day on offense:
Kenny Williams broke free untouched on a run with the offense backed up inside its
own 10 yard line.
Defense knew it was coming and couldn’t stop it.
A lot of situational work was done with down
and distance. This one should be a confidence builder for the defense with
multiple stops of series with both the first and second string. That said, there was a series of about 4-6 plays with the offense
working with their backs to the goal line. Offense ran as near an I-formation
as Neal Brown will run with Ontiveros in as a FB and Amaro lined up with his hand down on the line of scrimmage
as a TE. On a majority of those plays, the offense broke through to the second
line of defenders. This included the Kenny Williams run as well as a couple of
runs from Eric Stephens.
I really like what Jace
Amaro has done the past two days. Lots
of good catches in traffic. He’ll move the chains for sure.
Conversely, Alex Torres has really struggled
this week. I’ve seen him drop more passes this week than I have since he’s been
here. Hope this is just a blip on the radar screen, because if Torres doesn’t improve,
he’ll get passed on the depth chart.
Defensively, Leon Mackey
is a man on a mission. Looks like his injury is behind him and he’s the most
physical DL Tech has right now. People forget his lung popped like a balloon in
last year’s season opener. That injury mostly occurs in high impact vehicle
crashes. He was playing football 4 weeks after this last year when most people
would have a tough time breathing.
Also of note, Ryan Buston missed back to back field
goals, both from a makeable distance (35-40 yards). No one could remember him missing one all
camp. If memory serves, he had a similar day in spring practice, making
everything with the exception of one day where he missed back to back
