Evans Attends SMU Junior Day
Evans, who says he felt very comfortable in the SMU environment, learned about the various programs they have in place to ensure success on and off the football field.
"It was cool," Evans said. "They talked about how serious academics were, the different tutoring facilities and how they help you pick your major and minor. After that, they gave us a tour of the whole campus, the field, facilities and all that."
The 6-foot-3, 223-pounder has played the defensive end position within the 4-3 defensive scheme, which calls for four down lineman. However, after talking with SMU defensive coordinator Tom Mason on Saturday, Evans confirmed that he'll be recruited as an outside linebacker.
Evans, whose 40-yard-dash time has dipped down into the 4.5 area, says that he isn't concerned about the possible switch to linebacker because his athleticism will prove to be vital wherever he plays.
"It's being an athlete," Evans said. "I can play defensive end and I can play linebacker just being an athlete. Either way I would be happy with it."
Evans currently holds offers from SMU, Tulsa and Texas Tech but has been on the road recently visiting a number of schools for their junior days. Among them are Texas and Baylor, which Evans says were the most memorable.
"I liked Texas because they kind of just roll out the red carpet for you. They show you everything," Evans said. "The thing that kicked it off with Baylor was their whole workout program and all their coaches. They were really hyped and energetic."
Evans, who met Texas head coach Mack Brown while in Austin, says he saw SMU head coach June Jones at SMU junior day but did not get a chance to speak with him.
Evans has one goal for his senior season that will make his high school career a success- winning a state championship.
"If nothing else goes my way, I can't leave Skyline without giving them a state ring," Evans said. "We've put so much work into this since I was a freshman. With all the great athletes that have come out of Skyline I have to leave with a state ring."
