Defense Outlasts Offense 34-28 in Spring Game

It was the first spring game of the Kliff Kingsbury era and defense and offense both shined at points.

In the 2013 edition of the spring game, Texas Tech broke a school record in attendance as 16,116 looked on.

The defense jumped out to an early lead and would never look back as they topped the fast paced, newly installed Tech offense by a score of 34-28, putting the game away on an interception in the end zone as time expired.

The offense struggled early on as they didn’t put their first points on the board until 27 minutes into the contest, cutting the deficit to 24-7. The defense made some key stops early in the game and seemingly made a statement throughout.

However, the offense would come roaring back as Brewer tossed 2 TDs and accumulated 282 passing yards on the afternoon. Freshman QB Davis Webb had a decent outing of his own as he threw for 224 yards and added a TD, including an 83 yarder in which he connected with Derreck Edwards to get the offense a much needed spark.

Jace Amaro led the way offensively as he reeled in 11 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown, while Quinton White also had a solid performance as he tacked on 62 yards on 14 carries.

But the real story of the day was the defense. They held the offense to just four touchdowns on the day as well as getting two interceptions from J.J. Gaines and Dawson Gamble.

Coach Kingsbury was very impressed with the record setting crowd and he explained how big that was for his football team.

"I loved the atmosphere," Kingsbury said. "It was a great crowd and our kids were fired up. I thought the defense came out and really competed well. Both sides kept it base but their effort was really, really good."

Texas Tech debuts the 2013 season on Friday, August 30th as they head to Big D to face Big East newcomer, SMU. The game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
