Signature Win for Tubby

Texas Tech had come excruciatingly close to defeating some very good teams earlier this season. But Wednesday night the Red Raiders jumped on Baylor from the opening tip and never looked back before an electric crowd at United Spirit Arena.

Texas Tech scored its first upset over a top 25 team since 2009 when the Red Raiders defeated Baylor 82-72 Wednesday night.

Some are saying it is the biggest victory since that December night in 2009 against Washington when the Red Raiders remained undefeated under then-head coach Pat Knight.

The win over Baylor is bigger than that. The victory against Washington was a nice addition to Pat Knight’s resume on Tech’s way to a disappointing berth to the National Invitational Tournament.

Pat Knight never scored another marquee win as the Red Raiders head man. Since that December night, Tech is on the fourth head coach in four years. The Red Raiders have seen players come in and transfer out. Tech played the whole 2012-13 season with an interim coach. In two seasons, Tech posted three conference wins, one of which came against a dismal TCU team that had just moved up from the Mountain West Conference because the school had a great decade in football.

This victory is more than just an upset. It’s not a step into the right direction, but a major leap. Head coach Tubby Smith is bringing more than just great basketball knowledge to Lubbock. He’s bringing stability, discipline and a winning attitude. The win against Baylor is a signal that change is in progress and the Red Raiders are on the verge of breaking out.

This team may not finish with a winning record, but don’t be surprised if it pulls off another major upset. It may score a road victory or two.

This season, Tech could make the NIT, but next season Tech will be fighting for an NCAA berth. This team is better and will continue to improve. For the first time all season, I was able to say “It’s Tubby time.”
