The second of (at least) six breakdowns detailing the talents of Texas Tech's 2014 basketball…
Plano East High School senior Zach Smith, a Texas Tech signee, is having a strong season for his team so far, with 15.5 points and 13 rebounds a game. Plano East (14-9 overall) is currently third in District 10-5A following their 55-46 loss to Plano Senior on Tuesday. Speaking to the 6-foot-7, 205-pound forward via telephone recently, Smith first noted his team's performance this year: "It's been a good year, but the one thing we need to work on is our consistency." Smith's 20-point, 28-rebound performance against McKinney last week made headlines and was one of his best games this season. "We had a height and size advantage against them," he said. "I was bigger and more athletic than them," he added. Using these tools to his advantage, Smith guided Plano East to a 65-52 win. It has been an up-and-down season for the team at large, but Smith has been the star of Plano East thus far. Noting his personal improvement, Smith said he's been averaging a double-double. When questioned about his plans to impact Texas Tech next season, he mentioned the contributions of another rangy Red Raider forward: Jaye Crockett. "I want to come in and have that kind of impact," Smith said. "Work hard, get stronger, and hopefully get to that level."
