Texas Tech Drops Season Opener

Texas Tech dropped Friday's season opener 1-0 to No. 3 Indiana.

Texas Tech suffered a 1-0 loss against No. 3 Indiana on Opening Day, Friday but there are positives to take out of the Red Raiders season debut.

Texas Tech junior right handed pitcher Dominic Moreno opened the season on the mound. This is the first Red Raider to pitch back-to-back season openers since Chad Bettis in 2009-10. He pitched for a total of 6 innings and only allowed one run and five hits. The only run scored in the game was in the first inning by junior center fielder Will Nolden. Head coach Tim Tadlock chimes in on Moreno's performance.

"I don't think he was as sharp as he will be. I think I said the other day he is probably knocking off a little rust right now," Tadlock said. "It was good to get him out there. It was unfortunate we couldn't score a couple of runs for him."

The Red Raiders struggled on offense and couldn't complete the opportunities for a run. Texas Tech had a total of four hits, zero errors, one walk and six strikeouts. This could be contributed to Indiana's talent on the mound. Indiana starting left hand pitcher Joey DeNato was competitive and responsible for three of the Hoosiers' six strikeouts. Tadlock said its not going to get any easier this weekend so they are going to have to step things up to produce runs.

"The guys that run out there tomorrow are going to be competitive again just like DeNato was," Tadlock said. "Tip your hat to him he threw a heck of a game and we will bring it tomorrow the best we can."

Texas Tech did good work on defense and only allowed the one run by Indiana. There is no doubt that sophomore left handed relief pitcher Jonny Drozd started off his season right with striking out his first batter and allowing zero hits, runs or walks. Moreno talked about the mental strategy that goes in to a close game like Friday's.

"We just kept competing and you don't really think about it you just keep thinking do your job, do your job and keep it at 1-0 and we will come through and I know next time we will come through," Moreno said.

Texas Tech continues the series with Indiana on Saturday. It is probable that right handed pitcher Matt Withrow with be starting on the mound. First pitch is at 1 pm.
