The Red Raiders defeated BYU 4-2 Monday afternoon to finish their eight-game season-opening home stand 7-1. Next up is the Houston Classic this weekend at Minute Maid Park.
received a scare from the
Cougars after allowing a home run in the sixth inning, but the Red Raiders came through to end their eight game home stand on a seven-game winning streak.
Freshman LHP Dylan Dusek was stellar in his collegiate debut. The Sugar Land native had a leash of 60 pitches and he used every one of them to toss five shutout innings. After getting through round one of the BYU (1-8) lineup, the first base runner came with two outs in the fourth inning as Eric Gutierrez bobbled a ground ball.
Dusek allowed his first hit after the error, but one mound visit later and the freshman was out of the inning by producing a fly ball.
The Red Raiders (7-1) struck first blood in the second inning with back-to-back stand-up doubles from Adam Kirsch and Ryan Long. With a 2-0 lead, senior outfielder Todd Ritchie led off the third with a walk and would eventually come around to score what wound up as the game-winning run.
Both teams would remain silent until the sixth when sophomore RHP Matt Custred surrendered a two-out walk. The next batter, senior outfielder Kelton Caldwell, blasted a homer over the right field fence to cut the Red Raiders lead to one. Sophomore RHP Dalton Brown came out of the pen to finish the inning.
The Red Raiders would add an insurance run in the seventh inning when senior outfielder Devon Conley laid down a potential sacrifice bunt. BYU catcher Bronson Larsen fired the fair ball over the head of a leaping Brock Whitney which allowed junior catcher Hunter Redman to touch home plate and Conley to advance to second.
A combined effort by senior LHP Jonny Drozd and freshman RHP Ryan Moseley shut down the Cougars during the final two innings notching the victory for Dusek (1-0) in his collegiate debut.
