Lady Raiders shut down Nebraska

Posted Jan 21, 2004

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders (17-1, 3-1) won their second straight conference game, defeating the Nebraska Cornhuskers (13-3, 3-2) by a score of 68-55. Freshman Alesha Robertson led all scorers with 19 points.

Texas Tech tried to take control of the game early with an 8-0 run to take an 8-2 lead with 14:53 left in the first half. The lead didn’t last long though. Nebraska used a 7-0 run to tie the game at 11-11 with 10:30 to go in the half. Nebraska used a 9-0 run to take a 20-13 lead, but Texas Tech answered with a 5-0 run to make the score 20-18 with just 6:54 left in the first half. The Lady Raiders scored the final 6 points of the half to take a 30-26 lead into half time.

In the second half, Texas Tech used a 6-0 run to make the score 42-30 with 15:29 left in the game. The Lady Raiders extended their lead to as many as 17 points with just 4:20 left in the game. Nebraska was unable to close the gap to less than 11 points, giving Texas Tech the 68-55 victory.

Offense

In the first half, Texas Tech was unable to find a rhythm offensively. Erin Grant carried most of the load scoring 9 first half points. The second half saw more players like Cisti Greenwalt and Alesha Robertson take on a more prominent role. Robertson finished the game with 19 points. Greenwalt scored 16 points in the game. Casey Jackson scored 12 points to compliment a great defensive game. Grant dished out 9 assists to go with her 9 first-half points. Overall a solid performance for a team that is playing just it’s second game since losing it’s leading scorer.

Defense

Defense was the key to this victory. Despite a good first-half shooting the basketball, Texas Tech led at the half thanks to great defensive rebounding. The hard work on the defensive glass showed up in the stats as well. Texas Tech recovered 24 of 32 potential defensive rebounds. If the Lady Raiders can rebound like that every night, not many teams can beat them. Their biggest weakness defensively might be defending second shot attempts, if those are nearly eliminated, the Lady Raiders will continue to have success.
