Red Raiders fall short in Austin

The Texas Tech Red Raiders (19-9, 7-7) fell just short of pulling of a major upset as they fell to the Texas Longhorns (21-4, 12-2) in Austin. Andre Emmett led all scorers with 21 points, but it wasn’t enough to give the Red Raiders the victory.

Neither team was able to get anything going on the offensive end, leading to a slow back and forth battle for most of the first half. Texas Tech finally got things going with a 6-0 run to give the Red Raiders a 21-15 lead with 6:05 left in the first half. Texas fought back into the game with a 5-0 run that tied the score at 26 with 2:48 to go in the half. Texas led by a score of 33-30 at halftime.

Texas was able to slowly extend their lead to as many as 10 points before Texas Tech found a way to keep the game within reach. The Red Raiders scored 5 straight points to make the score 61-57 with 5:20 left in the game. Texas extended their lead to 7 points, but Texas Tech used a 4-0 run to make the score 69-66 with 2:07 to go in the game. Andre Emmett drew a foul and made both free throws to make the score 70-68 with just 38 seconds left in the game. Texas Tech fouled P.J.. Tucker on the ensuing possession. Tucker made both free throws to extend the Texas lead to 72-68 with 27 seconds to go in the game. Andre Emmett made a three pointer with 16 seconds remaining in the game to make the score 72-71. The Red Raiders fouled Brandon Mouton, who made both free throws to give Texas a 74-71 lead. Andre Emmett missed two three point attempts in the final 4 seconds to give Texas the 74-71 victory.
