Spring Practice Report 4/9

Spring Practice Report 4/9

The offense came to life following a couple of practices in which the defense played extremely well. Read on to find out what happened during Friday's practice.

The offense took control early in the practice, when the offensive line and running backs dominated in the run drills. Taurean Henderson and Johnnie Mack were able to gain yardage almost at will for most of the drill. A couple of defensive players did make some plays though. Fred Thrweatt and Patrice Majondo-Mwamba had another good day on the interior.

For the second practice in a row the snaps were split between Sonny Cumbie and Robert Johnson, the two leading candidates to replace B.J. Symons as the Texas Tech quarterback. Cumbie got off to a decent start in the skeleton drill, completing 7 of 11 passes to start the drill. He avoided an interception when Vincent Meeks was unable to hold onto his final pass of the drill. Johnson wasn't so lucky, throwing an interception to Chad Johnson on his first pass. The junior recovered to complete 8 of 11 passes in the drill. Both quarterbacks were 1 of 2 in the red zone, but Cumbie did get credit for a touchdown on a pass to Nehemiah Glover. Next up were the goal line drills. Cumbie was 2 of 3 and scored a touchdown when Jarrett Hicks made an acrobatic one handed catch in the corner of the end zone. Johnosn was 1 of 3, and also threw a touchdown to Hicks.

The offense continued to improve as the team drills started. Cumbie completed 8 of his 9 pass attempts, and scored a touchdown when Glover took a short screen pass all the way to the end zone. The first set of snaps also saw Mike Smith and Joey Hawkins engage in a physical fight following a pass to Joel Filani. Johnson came in and showed his ability to read the defense when he changed the play at the line, resulting in a long rushing touchdown by Taurean Henderson. Johnson completed 6 of 8 passes in the drill. In the red zone drill, Cumbie was a perfect 2 of 2, while Johnosn was 1 of 1 due to a scramble that was blown dead. The running backs took over when the drill moved to the goal line. Henderson scored tow touchdowns in the six snaps, while Mack and Taurance Rawls both scored a single touchdown. Cumbie was 1 of 1, finding hicks for another circus catch in the end zone, while Johnson was 0 of 1 in the drill.
