Leach says UTEP will be good challenge

Last season the Red Raiders traveled to El Paso to play the UTEP Miners for their second game of the season and squeaked out a 38-35 win in overtime. This time around, UTEP will be coming to Lubbock for the Red Raiders home opener for the 2007 season. Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach is expecting a good challenge from the Miners.

Last season the Red Raiders traveled to El Paso to play the UTEP Miners for their second game of the season and squeaked out a 38-35 win in overtime.  Darcel McBath picked off UTEP QB Jordan Palmer’s pass, setting up a game winning field goal attempt for Alex Trlica from 49 yards out.

Trlica shanked the ball off the upright, but fortunately it went in.

“It was really close last year and a heck of an environment there in El Paso,” said Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach.  “Probably the 2nd loudest place we played all year, so it’s good to have them here at our place."

WR Danny Amendola will need to step up again against UTEP

The Red Raiders played SMU on Monday and have only 5 days to prepare for their contest this Saturday against UTEP.  With such a short turnaround time, playing a team and coach that they have faced recently and are familiar with may seem to be an advantage for Texas Tech.

There is just one problem with that though.

“The trouble with those teams you are familiar with is that they are familiar with you too,” said Leach.

UTEP is coming off a hard fought 10-6 win against New Mexico.  UTEP only managed 195 total yards of offense and allowed the Lobos to rack up 383 yards, but somehow they were able to keep them out of the end zone and pull out the victory.

“They played real hard and had one of those wins against New Mexico that you have to fight for everything you get, which I thought they did a good job of doing together,” said Leach.  “They’ll be a good challenge and I look forward to having another game too.”

Texas Tech and UTEP will square off at 6 p.m. Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium.  47,052 tickets have been sold as of Tuesday.
