Memphis RB Interested in Red Raiders

Gabriel Hunter, a running back out of Kingsbury High in Memphis, Tennessee, has been getting interest from programs in the SEC and Big 12. With offers from Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Mississippi just to name a few, Hunter is weighing his options carefully before deciding on a school. RaiderPower.com has the latest…

As a junior, Gabriel Hunter had an outstanding season, rushing for 2,679 yards and 29 touchdowns. He was also a finalist for Mr. Football for the state of Tennessee. With those kind of stats and good size (he’s 5’11”, 185 pounds), it’s no wonder Hunter has so many big time programs after him.

Hunter is trying to narrow down his list over the summer by camping at some of the schools that have offered. He has attended Alabama’s camp and is headed to Ole Miss and possibly Auburn later this summer.

One school that he has not yet visited but that is high on his list is Texas Tech. Hunter was offered a scholarship by the Red Raiders, and he’s planning on seeing them in action.

“I got an offer from Texas Tech toward the end of the school year,” Hunter told us. “I definitely want to visit. I don’t have a visit set up yet, but it will probably be during the season.”

As a native of Memphis, Assistant Coach Dennis Simmons is one of the main recruiting links to the state of Tennessee, but Hunter informed us that nearly the entire coaching staff has been in on his recruitment.

“I’ve talked to almost all of the coaches. I like [Texas Tech] a lot. I think the coaches are cool, and they have the number 1 ranked offense in the country, so that’s a big plus too.”

Gabriel also knows that the Red Raiders often use running backs as short yardage receivers, a role he is comfortable playing and may factor into his decision.

As far as a timeline for when he plans to commit, Gabriel is still a little bit up in the air.

“I’m thinking about committing before the school year starts back, but I’m not really sure. I’m just going to have to wait and see how things go.”
