Southlake Carroll defensive end Jackson Richards will make the trek to Lubbock tomorrow for the Red Raiders’ Junior Day. The talented d lineman, who was first team all-state as a junior, is excited to make the trip to the school he’s been committed to for almost a year. RaiderPower.com talked with him about his upcoming visit.

With both of his parents alumni of Texas Tech and grandparents who live in Lubbock, Southlake Carroll defensive end Jackson Richards has spent his whole life cheering on the Red Raiders.

This weekend he’ll make the familiar trek to the South Plains for Junior Day, and he’s hoping to get even more comfortable with the team he’s loved for so long.

“I’ve seen most of the facilities, but I’m sure I’ll see some things I haven’t seen before,” Richards stated. “Hopefully I’ll get a feel for the guys I’ll be playing with in college. I would also like to meet some of my future teammates while I’m there.”

Jackson will be joined by teammate Mitchell Osborne, who plays outside linebacker for the Dragons.

“We have a track meet tomorrow, but I only throw the shot put, so I’m just going to throw and then head up to Lubbock. He’s going to the track meet as well, but he’ll spend the night in Abilene and then come to Lubbock on Saturday.”

Mitchell has been hearing quite a bit from TCU, Arkansas, SMU, Oklahoma State, and Stanford. The Red Raiders are interested as well, although they have not offered at this point.

“I can’t say for sure what all schools Mitchell is interested in, but I know he likes Texas Tech a lot. They’re in his top five no doubt.”

As for Richards, he’s still hearing from other schools as well, despite being committed to the Red Raiders for close to a year.

“I’m still getting the average stuff, letters from mailing lists and that kind of thing. I actually got a verbal offer from LSU about two months ago as well.”

Jackson reassured us, though, that he still is 100% committed to the Red Raiders.

“I’m very solid to Tech, and I just don’t really see that changing. Now with Coach Leach having signed his extension, there won’t be any coaches, so I’m pretty dang solid.”

The 2009 recruiting class that inked with the Red Raiders was another high point for Richards, who followed the commitments closely.

“It was a pretty good recruiting class. I know the running back [Eric Stephens] is supposed to be really good. The wide receiver who switched from Oklahoma, Eric Ward, is also very good, and I’ve heard a lot of good things about the receiver from Fossil Ridge [Aaron Fisher]. The linebacker from Fossil Ridge [Brandon Mahoney] and the two defensive tackles who signed at the last minute [Pearlie Graves and Myles Wade] were all really good news, and I’m really looking forward to playing with them.”

As for when he’ll share a field with them, Jackson says he’s eager to play at the collegiate level but also willing to wait to give himself time to develop and learn the system.

“I’m a team guy, so I’ll do whatever is best for the team. I think everybody wants to redshirt their first year, but it’s whatever the team needs me to do. If they need me to step in and play, I will.”

Despite the excitement surrounding this weekend and his visit to Lubbock, Jackson told us his main focus is contributing to the team he is presently a part of.

“Over the off-season, I’m not trying to gain weight or anything. I’m just trying to do the basics, get bigger, stronger, faster, and better. We’ve worked hard and hopefully we’ll have a good season. It’s definitely been the best off-season I’ve been a part of.”
