In recent years, the Red Raider coaching staff's focus has been on recruiting atheltic, fast defenders. On Monday they added another prototype to the 2009 recruiting class in Louisiana CB Brandon Smith. RaiderPower.com spoke with Smith's head coach, Chad Callais, about his commitmet.

Texas Tech newest commit, CB Brandon Smith out of Central Lafourche High School in Raceland, Louisiana, is an extremely fast defensive back with a knack for breaking on the ball and making big plays.

RaiderPower.com spoke with Central Lafourche head coach Chad Callais, who explained why Smith decided to pull the trigger and commit to Texas Tech on Monday.

“He done a lot of talking with the coaches and visiting Texas Tech’s website, and he felt real comfortable with the coaches and the school. I think the opportunity to play in the Big 12 was a big factor.”

Texas Tech’s impressive 11-2 season last year also made a big impact on Brandon, who felt that playing for the Red Raiders would be a great opportunity.

“He felt like last year [Texas Tech] was one game away from playing in the National Championship game, and he wants to big on the big stage and part of what they are building there. They’ve built a lot of notoriety with their offense, and it’s a good program and school.”

What was it about Smith that impressed the Texas Tech coaches enough to extend an offer?

“I think the Tech coaches liked his height and speed. He’s between 6’0” and 6’1”, and he’s very agile and athletic. He’s a lock down corner who excels at man-to-man coverage and can handle his own out on the edge. It’s a really great benefit to know that he’s going to be able to stick with his receiver and not let him get away.”

In addition to his prowess on the football field, Smith is a standout basketball player and track star for the Trojans. And while his athleticism and speed have allowed him to excel at all three sports, Coach Callais believes that once he begins to focus solely on football, he will be even more dangerous on the field.

“Brandon is a multi-sport athlete, and so he hasn’t really had the opportunity to hit the weight room hard. He’s got a great frame to build upon, and he’s not done growing yet, so he will really blossom when he gets in the weight room.”

Callais says Brandon is very comfortable with his decision and excited to be a part of the Red Raider nation.

“Brandon also had a scholarship offer from Florida International and some of the in-state schools were talking with him a lot, but he’s very solid to Texas Tech.”

With Brandon firmly committed to the Red Raiders, he’s anticipating his first trip to Lubbock to learn more about the school he will be attending.

“We are planning an official visit sometime in the fall so that he can attend one of Tech’s games and see what the home atmosphere is like.”
