Stony Point safety and recent Texas Tech commit Desmond Martin and his Stony Point Tigers had an oustanding showing during last week's state 7-on-7 tournament, winning the championship game over Cy Fair. We caught up with Desmond to get his thoughts on the game and what's next for the talented defender.

After losing a 23-21 in the the state semi-finals last season, the Stony Point Tigers have been focused on exceeding last years' success. They are already off to a great start, winning the state 7-on-7 championship in a thrilling 33-31 victory over Cy Fair.

Raiderpower.com talked with Stony Point safety and recent Texas Tech commit Desmond Martin about the tournament and his individual and team's progress.

"As a team I thought we did really good," Desmond told us. "I mean, we could have been better, you can always say that, but we're pretty young team right now and I think that it says a lot that we were able to go out and win the championship."

Martin feels that the championship is a great building block for next year's team to build upon.

"I think the main thing winning did was to boost our confidence, which we needed because we lost a bunch of starters after last season. We are a very young team and to have new guys come in and do so well says a lot about us.

"The main thing we need to make sure of is that we are confident but not over-confident. We have to find a balance, and make sure that winning doesn't just go to our heads."

Desmond had a solid showing and said that he saw improvements in himself since he last played competively.

"I did pretty well; I didn’t have much come my way but when I did I took care of business. After playing, I feel pretty confident in our secondary."

"Individually, I feel like I’ve definitely improved- my breaking ability, the way I’m getting to the ball. I think I've gotten a lot better since last season."

With the 2009 season just around the corner, Desmond and his teammates are working hard to replicate and exceed last year's success.

"I think two-a-days start August 11th. I'm staying on my workout regimen right now; I don’t really feel like there’s time to take a break."

By advancing all the way to the championship game, the Tigers were able to preview some of their potential upcoming competition, which will be very useful come playoff time next season.

"There was some great competition there, a lot of close and hard fought games. I think that the what we saw from the other teams we faced will definitely help us prepare for next year and possibly playing some of the same teams again."

Despite their victories, Martin says he still sees areas for improvement as a team.

"Improving communication is the most key thing we need to get better on for defense. We also need to be able to handle own assignments and space and defenders."

The Stony Point coaches were thrilled with their young team's success, and Desmond says that they talked extensively about building upon the championship come August.

"Obviously, our coaches can't participate or help coach at all in 7-on-7's, but they were very excited with the way we played and that we won it all. Actually, they told us they didn’t expect us to get that far and were really excited to see that we did so well."

With 7-on-7's over and now that the dust has settled on Desmond's recruitment, he says that he is looking forward to life getting back to normal.

"As far as my commitment to Texas Tech, I'm still very solid and feel like it's the right place for me to go. I'm relieved that I don’t have to focus on recruiting and can just get back to my normal schedule."
